Top Three Reasons People Have Eating Disorders 1. Trauma: Many with eating disorders have some form of traumatic event that has occurred in their lives. Whether it’s the loss of loss of a friend or parent, or being a victim of a violent sexual assault it can be overwhelming and make a person feel shame, disgust, and anger at themselves and others. Low self esteem caused by varying types of traumatic events can lead to an eating disorder. 2. Perfectionism: Many students feel the need to be their best at everything to include their physical selves. Often times the perfectionist creates a thought process that makes them feel as if they have to be perfect to be accepted by friends and family. This can lead to an eating disorder and exemplify their need for appreciation and acceptance from others. 3. Social Anxiety: Those with eating disorders often experience a high level of social anxiety and have a difficult time sharing their thoughts and feelings with others. There may be some forms of abuse in their lives that has caused them to feel overwhelmed and unable to feel confident in relationships and social situations. These persons can be married or single, and with or without children. Their eating disorder allows them an opportunity to be able to cope with their anxiety using eating disorder behaviors.
